What I Am

I’m a dog. I’m a big dog.  A big, black and white, somewhat cross-eyed dog who drools.  A big, black and white, somewhat cross-eyed dog who drools and has gigantic feet with tufts of hair sticking out between my toes.  A big, black and white, somewhat cross-eyed dog who drools and has gigantic feet with tufts of hair sticking out between my toes and different colored fur all around my ears that kind of makes me look like i am wearing a toupee. I’m a big dog.  I’m a dog.

Recently i have noticed a lot of people ask mom and dad “what i am”.  People are naturally drawn to me, in fact, it took nearly ten minutes for mom and me to make our way out of our favorite watering hole the other day because so many people came over to say hello.  And the first person in each group always started with, “What is he?”

I’m a dog.  I’m a big dog. A big, black and white……..well, you remember.

All of these questions got me thinking about what i am, so i pondered…

While we were out walking the other day (i get to go for a walk every day), i looked  around me and i saw a bunch of dogs. Some of the dogs were little brown dogs with long noses and short legs.  Some of the dogs were medium sized white dogs with black spots and long skinny tails. Some of the dogs were fluffy dogs with lots of fur and eyes i could barely see. Some of the dogs were fast dogs with sleek bodies and feet ready to run.  Some of the dogs were nervous dogs with dry noses and shaky knees. Some of the dogs were confident dogs with lots of muscles buried beneath their coats. Some of the dogs had wrinkles, some of the dogs had manes, some of them had floppy ears, some of them had tan fur and some of them had gray.

While we were out walking the other day, i looked around.  I saw a billion dogs, and none of them looked like me, but darn it if they weren’t all dogs.

When people ask mom “what i am”, she always responds with, “he’s a St. Bernard and Mastiff mix”.  So clearly, THAT is what i am.

But,

What

Is

That

?

According to a quick web search, St. Bernards are calm, patient, and gentle while Mastiffs are dignified, loving and affectionate.

I’m calm…sometimes.

I’m patient…sometimes.

I’m gentle…usually.

I’m dignified…debatable.

I’m loving…absolutely.

I’m affectionate…is that a synonym for loving?

I am a calm and patient gentle giant who conducts himself in a dignified manner and treats others with loving affection.

So,

What

Is

That?

The other day i got so excited when mom called my name that i came running— nay, flying— off the hill where i keep watch and hit the porch like a madman which caused my legs to spiral out from under me and me to careen into a deck chair and the deck chair to fall over and me to topple on top of the chair and everyone witnessing the scene to laugh. Affectionately.

Imperfectphil.  Philip T. Basher.  Phil. Calm and dignified, said no person ever.

Maybe what is written on the internet about me is not entirely true.

i’m a dog, i love life, and i have flaws.  i’m perfect. imperfect. Just. Like. You.

Tell me what's on your mind!
