What i like most about a spring day is strolling around our yard, checking out the flower buds, and watching the world come to life.
Spring is such an exciting time, especially for a guy like me who wakes up every morning (at exactly 5:15) eats, barks, goes back to sleep and then wakes up again at exactly 7:15 with a gleam in his eye and a joyful anticipation for the unforeseen wonders of the day. I have a routine.
What i like most about a spring day is reclining on the back deck peeking into the cracks and waiting for the bees to buzz.
Spring is great because it isn’t summer yet. I mean, we all know i love winter most of all….like LOVE it, and i am not a fan of summer because it is too darn hot in NJ, but spring is fun because the breezes still blow and the night temps are still low.
What i like most about a spring day is sitting in the driveway looking around me as the deer pass by and the squirrels…what? squirrel? where?
Phew. Whoa.
Spring is a time to make repairs, turn over a new leaf (literally), and prepare for the lazy me days ahead. Spring is short, but it is a time of change and growth and rebirth and sunshine and rain and flowers and trees and mud.
As much as i think Spring is about strolling, reclining, and sitting, this year i also learned that Spring is about hard work, dedication, preparation, anticipation, and the mama bird.
A mama bird made her nest on the corner of our front porch this Spring. As soon as we learned she was there, our household locked down into Operation Baby Bird Watch. Molly, Sheeva and i were banned from the porch so we would not disturb the incubation, hatching, and inevitable pathway to flight of the robin runts.
Over the two weeks mama nested down with the babies, i was fascinated by the time and energy she devoted to her family. Every morning she left the nest in search of breakfast…worms, grubs, beetles, weevils! From my resting spot in the yard…or on the porch…or in the driveway…or from the sofa, i watched her land, listen, hop, poke, peck and pull. Back to the nest of neediness. Me! Me! Me! Feed. Feed. Feed. Back to the yard…land, listen, hop, poke, peck and pull. Back to the nest of neediness. Me! Me! Me! Yum. Yum. Yum. Back to the yard…land, listen, hop, poke, peck and pull. Back to the nest of neediness. Me! Me! Me! Mom! Mom! Mom!
To be truthful, i was exhausted after merely observing the first round of the robin, but she never stopped! How was she doing it?? There were times when i swear she took off and returned within ten seconds.
Google? (yes, i Google with my big ole paws)
Both parents feed baby robin birds. Between them, they can make one hundred feeding visits in just one day.
Dog mind blown. I AM ALWAYS LEARNING SOMETHING NEW
As i returned to my strolling, reclining, and sitting, i thought to myself, “Phil, the world is full of stuff you do not know.”
And that’s ok.
Bring on summer.
i’m a dog, i love life, and i have flaws. i’m perfect. imperfect. Just. Like. You.
